Newville AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Newville AL. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to evaluate. For example, many potential students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found several that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the only things that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Newville AL electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Newville AL. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Alabama vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by Alabama community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Alabama institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Newville AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Newville AL can undertake a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Newville AL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting costs from Newville AL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Newville AL electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Newville AL area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Newville AL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Newville AL grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Newville AL area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Newville AL electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Newville residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Newville AL, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Every program provides different options for certification also. Perhaps The ideal means to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Invest some time to sit in on some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you select is the best one for you.
