How to Enroll in the Right Electrician Trade School near Pinckard Alabama

Pinckard AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Pinckard AL. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have identified some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Pinckard AL electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Pinckard AL. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Alabama technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are provided by Alabama community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Alabama colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Pinckard AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Pinckard AL can perform a multitude of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Pinckard AL student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Pinckard AL are also minimized and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Pinckard AL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Pinckard AL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Pinckard AL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Pinckard AL grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Pinckard AL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Pinckard AL electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Pinckard home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Pinckard AL, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Pinckard AL electricians working on power linesPicking the right electrician trade school will undoubtedly be the most important decision you will make to begin your new trade. You originally came to this website due to an interest in Become Licensed Electrician and wanting more information on the topic Electrician Courses Night School. But as we have covered in this article, there are several things that you will need to assess and compare between the schools you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are assessing includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes need to be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should offer a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the type of credential offered, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each program offers unique possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to attend some classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you select is the right one for you. With the proper training, hard work and commitment, the end outcome will be a new occupation as a professional electrician in Pinckard AL.
