Pine Hill AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Pine Hill AL. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For example, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found some that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Pine Hill AL electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Pine Hill AL. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Alabama vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Alabama junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Alabama institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Pine Hill AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Pine Hill AL can undertake a vast array of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Pine Hill AL student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting expenses from Pine Hill AL are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Pine Hill AL electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Pine Hill AL region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Pine Hill AL school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Pine Hill AL graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Pine Hill AL area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Pine Hill AL electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Pine Hill residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Pine Hill AL, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Online Classes For Electrician and wanting more information on the topic Industrial Electrician Courses Online. But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to examine and compare among the schools you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician tech school that you are examining includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world context, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs vary in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Every training program offers different options for certification also. Probably The ideal means to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the teachers and students. Take the time to sit in on a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the school you pick is the ideal one for you. With the proper training, effort and commitment, the end outcome will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Pine Hill AL.
