How to Pick the Right Electrician Technical School near Union Grove Alabama

Union Grove AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Union Grove AL. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of factors to consider. For instance, many students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located some that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the only things that must be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Union Grove AL electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Union Grove AL. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Alabama technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Alabama community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Alabama colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Union Grove AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Union Grove AL can undertake a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Union Grove AL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Union Grove AL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Union Grove AL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Union Grove AL region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Union Grove AL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Union Grove AL grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Union Grove AL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Union Grove AL electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Union Grove residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Union Grove AL, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare between the schools you are looking at. It’s a must that any electrical training program that you are considering includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Training programs differ in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each program offers different options for certification also. Probably the best way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Take the time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you decide on is the right one for you.
