Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Vinemont AL electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Vinemont AL. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Alabama vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by Alabama community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Alabama colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Vinemont AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Vinemont AL can perform a vast array of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Vinemont AL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling expenses from Vinemont AL are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Vinemont AL electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Vinemont AL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Vinemont AL program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Vinemont AL graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Vinemont AL area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Vinemont AL electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Vinemont home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Vinemont AL, check that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards.
