Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Kwethluk AK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Kwethluk AK. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Alaska vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Alaska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Alaska institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam
