Adona AR electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Adona AR. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are so many variables to evaluate. For instance, some potential students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have identified several that are within commuting distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the only qualifications that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Adona AR electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Adona AR. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Arkansas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are offered by Arkansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Arkansas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Adona AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Adona AR can undertake a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Adona AR student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Adona AR are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Adona AR electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Adona AR area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Adona AR program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Adona AR graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Adona AR area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Adona AR electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Adona home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Adona AR, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
