Beebe AR electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Beebe AR. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly since there are so many points to evaluate. For instance, some potential students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have located some that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the only qualifications that need to be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Beebe AR electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Beebe AR. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Arkansas trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are provided by Arkansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Arkansas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Beebe AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Beebe AR can carry out a wide range of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Beebe AR student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Beebe AR are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Beebe AR electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Beebe AR region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Beebe AR school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Beebe AR graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Beebe AR area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Beebe AR electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Beebe home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Beebe AR, verify that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrical Training Courses and wanting more information on the topic Certified Electrician Course. But as we have discussed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to assess and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a must that any electrician training program that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world perspective, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each program offers unique options for certification as well. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the faculty and students. Take the time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you select is the right one for you. With the proper training, effort and commitment, the end result will be a new career as a professional electrician in Beebe AR.
