Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Benton AR electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Benton AR. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Arkansas technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by Arkansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Arkansas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Benton AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Benton AR can carry out a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Benton AR student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from Benton AR are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Benton AR electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Benton AR region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Benton AR program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Benton AR students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Benton AR area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Benton AR electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Benton home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Benton AR, check that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
