Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

De Witt AR electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near De Witt AR. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Arkansas technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are offered by Arkansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Arkansas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

De Witt AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in De Witt AR can carry out a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

De Witt AR student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from De Witt AR are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask De Witt AR electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the De Witt AR area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the De Witt AR school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help De Witt AR graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with De Witt AR area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local De Witt AR electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your De Witt home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near De Witt AR, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
