Doddridge AR electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Doddridge AR. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some prospective students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have located a few that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole qualifications that must be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Doddridge AR electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Doddridge AR. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Arkansas technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Arkansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Arkansas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Doddridge AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Doddridge AR can undertake a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Doddridge AR student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting costs from Doddridge AR are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Doddridge AR electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Doddridge AR area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Doddridge AR school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Doddridge AR graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Doddridge AR area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Doddridge AR electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Doddridge home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Doddridge AR, verify that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
