Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Louann AR electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Louann AR. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Arkansas technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are offered by Arkansas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Arkansas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Louann home. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction.
