Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Aguanga CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Aguanga CA. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by California vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain California institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Aguanga CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Aguanga CA can undertake a vast array of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Aguanga CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Aguanga CA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Aguanga CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Aguanga CA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Aguanga CA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Aguanga CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Aguanga CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Aguanga CA electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Aguanga home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Aguanga CA, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
