Comptche CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Comptche CA. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For example, some prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that need to be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Comptche CA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Comptche CA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by California technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by California community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some California institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Comptche CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Comptche CA can undertake a vast array of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Comptche CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting costs from Comptche CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Comptche CA electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Comptche CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Comptche CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Comptche CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Comptche CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Comptche CA electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Comptche home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Comptche CA, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Comptche, California

Comptche is a census-designated place[3] in Mendocino County, California, United States.[2] It is located 17 miles (27 km) southeast of Fort Bragg,[4] at an elevation of 187 feet (57 m).[2] There is a KG-3 Primary school serving the town. The population was 159 at the 2010 census.

Comptche is located at 39°15′54″N 123°35′28″W / 39.26500°N 123.59111°W / 39.26500; -123.59111 (39.2648954, -123.5911224).[2] It is in USPS ZIP code 95427 and lies at the junction of three minor roads. The Comptche–Ukiah road extends west from Comptche approximately 15 miles (24 km) to Mendocino on State Route 1 and continues east (as Orr Springs Road) 33 miles (53 km) to Ukiah on U.S. 101 (passing through Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve approximately halfway to Ukiah). Flynn Creek Road connects southward 8 miles (13 km) to State Route 128 in Navarro River Redwoods State Park, near the town of Navarro. Flynn Creek Road and the western segment of the Comptche–Ukiah road provide an alternative route between Mendocino and the Anderson Valley, used in winter storms when the Navarro River floods Route 128.

The Comptche post office opened in 1877, closed later that same year, and re-opened in 1879.[4] Although the precise origin of the town's name is unknown, there was a village of the Pomo people named Komacho nearby.[5]
