Desert Hot Springs CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Desert Hot Springs CA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For instance, some students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have located some that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the only factors that should be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Desert Hot Springs CA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Desert Hot Springs CA. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by California technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain California institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Desert Hot Springs CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Desert Hot Springs CA can undertake a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Desert Hot Springs CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Desert Hot Springs CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Desert Hot Springs CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Desert Hot Springs CA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Desert Hot Springs CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Desert Hot Springs CA graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Desert Hot Springs CA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Desert Hot Springs CA electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Desert Hot Springs home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Desert Hot Springs CA, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Desert Hot Springs, California

Desert Hot Springs, also known as DHS, is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The city is located within the Coachella Valley geographic region, sometimes referred to as the Desert Empire. The population was 25,938 at the 2010 census, up from 16,582 at the 2000 census. The city has undergone rapid development and high population growth since the 1970s, when there were 2,700 residents.

It is named for its many natural hot springs.[8][9] It is one of few places in the world with naturally occurring hot- and cold mineral springs.[10] Desert Hot Springs is home to the largest collection of warm mineral springs in the United States. More than 20 natural mineral spring lodgings can be found in town.[11] Unlike most hot springs, the mineral springs in town are odorless.[12][11]

The only people residing in areas north of Palm Springs prior to the 20th century was Cahuilla Indians in the village of Seven Palms.[13] Although Cahuilla people never settled permanently in today’s Desert Hot Springs,[14] they often camped here during winter times due to the warm climate.[10]
