Fellows CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Fellows CA. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are so many variables to evaluate. For example, some students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have identified several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the only qualifications that must be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are accessible.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Fellows CA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Fellows CA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by California technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by California community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some California colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Fellows CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Fellows CA can undertake a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Fellows CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Fellows CA are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Fellows CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Fellows CA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Fellows CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Fellows CA grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Fellows CA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Fellows CA electrical contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Fellows residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Fellows CA, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Fellows, California

Fellows is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. Fellows is located 5 miles (8 km) west-northwest of Taft,[3] at an elevation of 1,316 feet (401 m).[2] The population was 106 at the 2010 census, down from 153 at the 2000 census. Fellows is surrounded on all sides by the enormous Midway-Sunset Oil Field, the third-largest oil field in the United States, and the oil and gas industry accounts for much of the area's economic activity.

Fellows developed as an oil boomtown after the 1909 discovery of the Midway Gusher.[4] The first post office at Fellows opened in 1910.[3] The name Fellows honors Charles A. Fellows, a Sunset Western Railroad contractor.[3]

Perhaps Fellows' greatest claim to fame was as the location of a fictional event. The 1969 educational film The Lottery, based on the famous short story by Shirley Jackson, was shot at Fellows.[5] It featured a small town much like thousands of others across America holding an apparently ordinary, mundane civic event that had a cold-blooded, horrifying ending to an unfortunate victim come from out-of-nowhere. The film was ranked as one of the two bestselling educational films ever[6] and has been widely shown in educational settings across America as an indictment against unthinking adherence to tradition and general inhumanity.
