Greenwood CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Greenwood CA. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of points to examine. For example, some prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training options that are accessible.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Greenwood CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Greenwood CA. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by California vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain California colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Greenwood CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Greenwood CA can undertake a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Greenwood CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Greenwood CA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Greenwood CA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Greenwood CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Greenwood CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Greenwood CA grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Greenwood CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Greenwood CA electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Greenwood residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Greenwood CA, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
