Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Grover Beach CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Grover Beach CA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by California vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some California colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:
