Hilmar CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Hilmar CA. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of points to examine. For example, some students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that should be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Hilmar CA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Hilmar CA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by California vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some California colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Hilmar CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hilmar CA can undertake a multitude of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Hilmar CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Hilmar CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hilmar CA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Hilmar CA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Hilmar CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Hilmar CA students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Hilmar CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hilmar CA electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Hilmar residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hilmar CA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

It’s a must that any electrician training that you are assessing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Each training program offers unique possibilities for certification also.
