Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Mad River CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Mad River CA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by California trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are offered by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some California colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Mad River CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mad River CA can undertake a multitude of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Mad River CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting costs from Mad River CA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Mad River CA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Mad River CA region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Mad River CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mad River CA students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Mad River CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Mad River CA electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Mad River home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mad River CA, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
