Oak Park CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Oak Park CA. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have located a few that are within driving range, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the sole qualifications that must be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Oak Park CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Oak Park CA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by California vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain California institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Oak Park CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Oak Park CA can undertake a vast array of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Oak Park CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning can be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Oak Park CA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Oak Park CA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Oak Park CA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Oak Park CA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Oak Park CA students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Oak Park CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Oak Park CA electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Oak Park residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Oak Park CA, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classroom education needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Oak Park, California

Oak Park is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, United States. When developed in the Simi Hills in the late 1960s, a single road provided the only access to the community from Agoura Hills, California, in neighboring Los Angeles County. As of the 2010 census, Oak Park had a population of 14,266, down from 14,625 at the 2000 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Oak Park as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name.

Oak Park is the biggest unincorporated community in Ventura County. Residents of the community have through votes declined to set up an independent city, and also declined to be annexed into neighboring Thousand Oaks.[3]

Oak Park has had human occupation from about 5500 B.C. to the present day. It lies within a zone including the early Millingstone Horizon and inland Chumash Indians. Indians camped throughout the area as they collected acorns, yucca, and other food. The sites in the area include major villages, smaller camps and several rock shelters.[4] Chumash people lived here for thousands of years prior to European contact. They lived off of trading, gathering and hunting. The Chumash originally settled in Oak Park due to an abundance of natural resources, including fresh water, acorns and rabbit-hunting.[5] It is one of the oldest occupied places in California.[6]
