Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Oak View CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Oak View CA. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by California technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by California community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some California colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

    Oak View, California

Oak View is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, United States located along the Ventura River between the towns of Casitas Springs (south) and Mira Monte (north) in a narrow river valley. Lake Casitas and the community of Ojai are nearby. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Oak View as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. At the 2010 census, the population of Oak View was 4,066, down from 4,199 at the 2000 census, making it the third largest community between Ojai and the city of Ventura.

The town of Oak View was established as a 'bedroom community' during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily home to local oil industry workers who found work in nearby Ventura. Besides nearby downtown Ojai, Oak View is the only other town in the Ojai Valley with a discernible "downtown", which has developed along the Ventura Avenue/Highway 33 corridor. Oak View's 'downtown' had a number of businesses and services that have withstood the test of time and economic conditions. Among them, you'll find a post office, a grocery store, a grocery mart, one bank, a Thai restaurant, a coffee house/restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a pizza parlor, two automobile repair shops, two tire shops, two self-serve gasoline stations, two coffee shops, an equipment rental yard, several hair stylists, a pet supplies store, a liquor store, a walk-in medical office, a car wash, and a laundromat.

At various times over the years, some locals have considered incorporating as a city, as an alternative to County of Ventura governance. Some considered a name change to "River City." But, until the town has the ability to provide the same services of an incorporated city, this won't happen.
