Olema CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Olema CA. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many variables to examine. For instance, many potential students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. When they have found a few that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Olema CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Olema CA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by California vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are offered by California community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some California colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Olema CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Olema CA can perform a multitude of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Olema CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Olema CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Olema CA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Olema CA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Olema CA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Olema CA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Olema CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Olema CA electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Olema home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Olema CA, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Accredited Electrician Degree Programs and wanting more information on the topic Electrician Certificate Programs. But as we have covered in this article, there are several factors that you will need to evaluate and compare among the schools you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Every training program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the faculty and students. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Olema, California

Olema is along State Route 1 at its intersection with Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, on the eastern edge of the Point Reyes Peninsula in the western part of Marin County. "Olema-loke" is Miwok Indian for little coyote.[2]

Olema was once thought to be the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake due to the huge fault rifts still visible via a nearby hiking path. There are historical references to this in and around the town, including at shops and restaurants. However, more recent evidence suggests that a location near Daly City is more likely the epicenter.[3]

Olema has a few shops, two restaurants (Sir and Star and Due West), a lodge, and several bed and breakfasts. Nearby is a large campground and also a large retreat for the Vedanta Society (a branch of Hinduism). Also, the Bear Valley Visitor Center, a quarter-mile from town on Bear Valley Road, provides a standard starting point for a visit to the Point Reyes National Seashore. Inside the center are exhibits and books for sale. Outside are picnic tables, a Morgan horse ranch, and Kule Loklo, a reconstructed Miwok village.[4]
