Piedmont CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Piedmont CA. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many points to examine. For instance, many students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have located a few that are within commuting range, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the only factors that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when picking an electrician school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Piedmont CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Piedmont CA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by California technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by California community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain California institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Piedmont CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning can be a more practical choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Piedmont CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Piedmont CA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Piedmont CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Piedmont CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Piedmont CA grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Piedmont CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Piedmont CA electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Piedmont residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Piedmont CA, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

It’s a necessity that any electrician training that you are evaluating includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Piedmont, California

Piedmont is a small, mostly residential, semi-suburban city located in Alameda County, California, United States. Piedmont is completely surrounded by the city of Oakland. Its residential population was 10,667 at the 2010 census. The name comes after the region of Piedmont in Italy, and literally means foothill. Piedmont was incorporated in 1907, and was developed significantly in the 1920s and 1930s. The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) includes three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools.

Residents originally sought incorporation in 1907. Two elections were held among the citizens of Piedmont in 1907, both of which narrowly upheld the decision for Piedmont to become a separate city, rather than become a neighborhood within the city of Oakland.

According to the city's Web page, "In the Roaring Twenties, Piedmont was known as the 'City of Millionaires' because there were more millionaires per square mile than in any city in the United States."[10] Many of these millionaires built mansions that still stand, notably on Sea View Avenue and Sotelo Avenue/Glen Alpine Road in 'Alta' Piedmont. Piedmont became a charter city under the laws of the state of California on December 18, 1922. On February 27, 1923, voters adopted the charter, which can only be changed by another vote of the people.
