Prather CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Prather CA. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you approach making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many points to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. When they have identified several that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Prather CA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Prather CA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by California technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some California institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Prather CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Prather CA can undertake a vast array of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Prather CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Prather CA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Prather CA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Prather CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Prather CA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Prather CA grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Prather CA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Prather CA electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Prather home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Prather CA, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classroom instruction should provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards.
