Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Reedley CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Reedley CA. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by California technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by California junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain California colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Reedley CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Reedley CA can undertake a multitude of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting costs from Reedley CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Reedley CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Reedley CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Reedley CA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Reedley CA students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Reedley CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Reedley CA electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Reedley residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Reedley CA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
