San Geronimo CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near San Geronimo CA. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some potential students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. After they have identified a few that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

San Geronimo CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near San Geronimo CA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by California vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by California community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some California colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

San Geronimo CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in San Geronimo CA can undertake a vast array of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

San Geronimo CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling costs from San Geronimo CA are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask San Geronimo CA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the San Geronimo CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the San Geronimo CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help San Geronimo CA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with San Geronimo CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local San Geronimo CA electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your San Geronimo residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near San Geronimo CA, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Classes need to be small in size and every student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards.
