Shasta Lake CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Shasta Lake CA. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many variables to evaluate. For instance, many students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have located a few that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Shasta Lake CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Shasta Lake CA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by California technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are offered by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some California colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Shasta Lake CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Shasta Lake CA can carry out a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Shasta Lake CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling expenses from Shasta Lake CA are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Shasta Lake CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Shasta Lake CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Shasta Lake CA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Shasta Lake CA students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Shasta Lake CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Shasta Lake CA electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Shasta Lake residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Shasta Lake CA, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Shasta Lake, California

The City of Shasta Lake, known as Central Valley or CV prior to incorporation, is a city in Shasta County, California, United States. It is the closest settlement to Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake reservoir, which are popular tourist destinations. The population was 10,164 at the 2010 census, up from 9,008 at the 2000 census.

Shasta Lake City started out as five small communities named Central Valley, Toyon, Project City, Pine Grove, and Summit City, all of which came about with the beginning of construction of Shasta Dam in 1938.[4] Project City was built at the intersection of U.S. Route 99 and Shasta Dam Boulevard, a larger Central Valley at a midpoint on Shasta Dam Blvd., Summit City at the intersection of Shasta Dam Boulevard and Lake Boulevard, and Pine Grove at what today is the intersection of Interstate 5 and Pine Grove Avenue.

The Bureau of Reclamation built the town of Toyon, first called Government Camp. Toyon was the premier community, built on 41 acres (17 hectares) of what was once the Seaman Ranch. By 1950 Toyon had two tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, a Community Center, green lawns, concrete side walks, commercial water and power from Shasta Dam, its own sewage treatment plant, and its own landfill. Initially, Toyon also had two large dormitories for bachelor employees. All the residents of Toyon worked for the US Bureau of Reclamation. Bureau headquarters office and maintenance facilities were located on Kenneth Ave, parallel to Shasta Dam Blvd.
