Somis CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Somis CA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly since there are a number of variables to examine. For instance, many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found a few that are within commuting range, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the only qualifications that should be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your final decision when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Somis CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Somis CA. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by California vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some California colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Somis CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Somis CA can undertake a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Somis CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more practical choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Somis CA are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Somis CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Somis CA region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Somis CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Somis CA grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Somis CA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Somis CA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Somis home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Somis CA, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Degrees Online and wanting more information on the topic Electrical Training Programs. But as we have addressed in this article, there are many things that you will need to assess and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Each training program offers different possibilities for certification as well. Probably the best approach to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Take the time to attend a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the school you pick is the ideal one for you. With the right training, hard work and dedication, the final result will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Somis CA.

    Somis, California

Somis is an unincorporated community of Ventura County, California that was established in 1892 by Thomas Bard and D.T. Perkins on a portion of the Mexican land grant, Rancho Las Posas.[5] Somis is in the Las Posas Valley[6](p194) on the south bank of Fox Barranca,[7] just west of Arroyo Las Posas.[8] The name of this townsite may have been derived from “water of the scrub oak,” a Chumash placename referring to the presence of water.[9] There was a Ranchería named Somes noted in records from 1795 and 1796.[10]

Like many of the farms on the adjacent Oxnard Plain, the crops of corn, wheat and barley grown here were shipped through the wharf that had been constructed in Hueneme in 1871.[5] Agricultural products were able to be shipped by rail when the line from Los Angeles to San Francisco was routed through the valley and a stop was established adjacent to the community. The current spelling of the name was established when the railroad came through.[10]

The school provides a sense of community for the town and the surrounding rural agricultural area that lies within the Somis Union School District boundary.[11] Several structures have been designated County of Ventura Landmarks.[12][13] The Camarillo station is the nearest stop for Amtrak and Metrolink trains and is served by Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner from San Luis Obispo to San Diego and Metrolink's Ventura County Line from Los Angeles Union Station to east Ventura.
