For example, some students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. While location and cost are important, they are not the only things that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Soquel CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Soquel CA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by California technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain California colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Soquel CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Soquel CA can perform a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Soquel CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Soquel CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Soquel CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Soquel CA region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Soquel CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Soquel CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Soquel CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Soquel CA electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Soquel residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Soquel CA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
