Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Sunland CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Sunland CA. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by California vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain California colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example.
