Quinebaug CT electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Quinebaug CT. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have located a few that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that should be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Quinebaug CT electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Quinebaug CT. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Connecticut technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are provided by Connecticut junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Connecticut colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Quinebaug CT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Quinebaug CT can carry out a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Quinebaug CT student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Quinebaug CT are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Quinebaug CT electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Quinebaug CT area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Quinebaug CT program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Quinebaug CT graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Quinebaug CT area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Quinebaug CT electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Quinebaug home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Quinebaug CT, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
