Mansfield GA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Mansfield GA. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are so many variables to consider. For instance, some potential students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified some that are within commuting distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the only factors that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Mansfield GA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Mansfield GA. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Georgia technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Georgia junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Georgia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Mansfield GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mansfield GA can undertake a wide range of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Mansfield GA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Mansfield GA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Mansfield GA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Mansfield GA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Mansfield GA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Mansfield GA students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Mansfield GA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Mansfield GA electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Mansfield home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mansfield GA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
