Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Hanamaulu HI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Hanamaulu HI. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Hawaii technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Hawaii junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Hawaii institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
