Keaau HI electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Keaau HI. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, many students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have located some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that should be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Keaau HI electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Keaau HI. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Hawaii technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Hawaii community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Hawaii colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Keaau HI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Keaau HI can perform a multitude of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Keaau HI student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Keaau HI are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Keaau HI electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Keaau HI region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Keaau HI school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Keaau HI grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Keaau HI area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Keaau HI electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Keaau residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Keaau HI, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

It’s a prerequisite that any electrical tech school that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and every student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Each training program offers unique options for certification as well. Perhaps The ideal means to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to sit in on some classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the school you choose is the best one for you.
