Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Laupahoehoe HI electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Laupahoehoe HI. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Hawaii vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Hawaii junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Hawaii colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Laupahoehoe HI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Laupahoehoe HI can perform a vast array of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Laupahoehoe HI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Laupahoehoe HI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Laupahoehoe HI electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Laupahoehoe HI area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Laupahoehoe HI school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Laupahoehoe HI graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Laupahoehoe HI area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Laupahoehoe HI electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Laupahoehoe residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Laupahoehoe HI, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
