Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Grainfield KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Grainfield KS. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Kansas technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Kansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Kansas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Grainfield KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Grainfield KS can perform a vast array of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Grainfield KS student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Driving expenses from Grainfield KS are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Grainfield KS electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Grainfield KS region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Grainfield KS program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Grainfield KS graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Grainfield KS area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Grainfield KS electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Grainfield home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Grainfield KS, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
