Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Pfeifer KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Pfeifer KS. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Kansas vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Kansas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.
