Ghent KY electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Ghent KY. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For example, some prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have found some that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final decision when selecting an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Ghent KY electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Ghent KY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Kentucky vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Kentucky community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Kentucky institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Ghent KY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ghent KY can perform a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Ghent KY student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving expenses from Ghent KY are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Ghent KY electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Ghent KY region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Ghent KY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ghent KY graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Ghent KY area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Ghent KY electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Ghent residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ghent KY, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

USCT soldiers suffered an undetermined number of casualties.[8]
