Salvisa KY electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Salvisa KY. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, many students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have identified a few that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that should be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Salvisa KY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Salvisa KY. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short explanations of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Kentucky vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Kentucky junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Kentucky colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Salvisa KY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Salvisa KY can carry out a wide range of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Salvisa KY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical option for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Salvisa KY are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Salvisa KY electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Salvisa KY area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Salvisa KY program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Salvisa KY grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Salvisa KY area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Salvisa KY electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Salvisa home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Salvisa KY, verify that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
