Winona, Kansas

Winona was originally known as Gopher, and under the latter name was founded in 1884. It was renamed Winona in 1887.[7] The community is named after the character Wenonah, the mother of Hiawatha in Longfellow's epic poem The Song of Hiawatha (1855).[8]

Winona is located at 39°3′42″N 101°14′42″W / 39.06167°N 101.24500°W / 39.06167; -101.24500 (39.061639, -101.244995).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.26 square miles (0.67 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 162 people, 74 households, and 40 families residing in the city. The population density was 623.1 inhabitants per square mile (240.6/km2). There were 107 housing units at an average density of 411.5 per square mile (158.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.9% White, 0.6% Asian, 1.9% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.

Woodbine, Kansas

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1857, Dickinson County was founded.

The city was founded as Lyons, named for the nearby creek, in 1871 by James Allen Gillett Sr. The first post office at Woodbine was established in January, 1872.[8] In 1887, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built through the area and Lyons was remapped as Woodbine on July 16, 1887. Gillett renamed it Woodbine after his former hometown of Woodbine, Illinois.

Along the railroad tracks, Woodbine had a grist mill, grain elevator, depot, and stock yards. Passenger service was offered until 1927 and freight was discontinued in the 1990s. Several bus lines served Woodbine after rail service ended. The town was home to the Woodbine Journal during World War I.

Woodston, Kansas

The town of Woodston was established along the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1885 as a railroad town between Bull City (Alton) and Stockton. Woodston was named for Stockton businessman Charles C. Woods who was instrumental in getting railroad service to Stockton.[7]

Woodston is located at 39°27′15″N 99°5′57″W / 39.45417°N 99.09917°W / 39.45417; -99.09917 (39.454301, -99.099116).[10] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.24 square miles (0.62 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 136 people, 53 households, and 38 families residing in the city. The population density was 566.7 inhabitants per square mile (218.8/km2). There were 82 housing units at an average density of 341.7 per square mile (131.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.9% White, 1.5% African American, 2.9% Asian, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

Wright, Kansas

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Wright has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[3]

Yates Center, Kansas

Yates Center was founded in August 1875. It was named for Abner Yates, the original owner of the town site, who donated an entire block around the courthouse, land for the churches, a city park, and a lot each for the first two children born in the town.[8][9] Yates Center is the only town in Kansas to be selected as a county seat before there was a house or inhabitant within its boundaries.[9]

Yates Center is located at 37°52′48″N 95°44′4″W / 37.88000°N 95.73444°W / 37.88000; -95.73444 (37.879948, -95.734522).[11] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.05 square miles (7.90 km2), of which, 2.61 square miles (6.76 km2) is land and 0.44 square miles (1.14 km2) is water.[1]

Kevin Yoder

Kevin Wayne Yoder (born January 8, 1976) is an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Kansas's 3rd congressional district from 2011 to 2019. A Republican, Yoder was the Kansas State Representative for the 20th district from 2003 to 2011.

Yoder was born and raised on a grain and livestock farm in Yoder, Kansas, a small farming town outside of Hutchinson. He is the son of Susan Elizabeth Peck (née Alexander) and Wayne E. Yoder. His ancestry includes Northern Irish, German, and English.[1]

Yoder graduated from Hutchinson High School and, in 1999, from the University of Kansas with a dual major in English and Political Science. He served as KU Student Body president, president of the Kansas Union Memorial Corporation Board of Directors, and as a board member of the KU Athletics Corporation. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, served as president, and received the 2012 Order of Achievement award from Lambda Chi Alpha.[2] While at KU, Yoder interned with the Kansas State Legislature. In 2002, he received a law degree from the University of Kansas Law School where he served for two years as Student Bar Association President.[3] Yoder has served on the KU Law School Board of Governors. He was a 2007 graduate of Leadership Kansas.

Whitewater, Kansas

For many millennia, the Great Plains of North America was inhabited by nomadic Native Americans. From the 16th century to 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership of large parts of North America. In 1762, after the French and Indian War, France secretly ceded New France to Spain, per the Treaty of Fontainebleau.

In 1802, Spain returned most of the land to France. In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre.

In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1855, Butler County was established within the Kansas Territory, which included the land for modern day Whitewater.

Zenda, Kansas

Zenda is located at 37°26′38″N 98°16′53″W / 37.44389°N 98.28139°W / 37.44389; -98.28139 (37.443895, -98.281263).[8] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.23 square miles (0.60 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 90 people, 44 households, and 24 families residing in the city. The population density was 391.3 inhabitants per square mile (151.1/km2). There were 55 housing units at an average density of 239.1 per square mile (92.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.8% of the population.

Whiting, Kansas

Whiting is located at 39°35′24″N 95°36′47″W / 39.59000°N 95.61306°W / 39.59000; -95.61306 (39.590001, -95.613116).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 187 people, 84 households, and 51 families residing in the city. The population density was 187.0 inhabitants per square mile (72.2/km2). There were 95 housing units at an average density of 95.0 per square mile (36.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.4% White, 1.6% Native American, and 7.0% from two or more races.

There were 84 households of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 9.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.3% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.80.

Wichita, Kansas

Wichita (/ˈwɪtʃɪtɔː/ WITCH-i-taw)[8] is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas[9][5] and the county seat of Sedgwick County. As of 2017, the estimated population of the city was 390,591.[6] Wichita is the principal city of the Wichita metropolitan area which had an estimated population of 644,610 in 2015.[10][11]

Located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River,[3] Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was incorporated as a city in 1870. It became a destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to Kansas railroads, earning it the nickname "Cowtown."[12][13]

In the 1920s and '30s, businessmen and aeronautical engineers established aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita, including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city became a U.S. aircraft production hub known as "The Air Capital of the World."[14]Textron Aviation, Learjet, Airbus, and Spirit AeroSystems continue to operate design and manufacturing facilities in Wichita, and the city remains a major center of the American aircraft industry. Wichita is also home to McConnell Air Force Base,[15][16] and Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the largest airport in Kansas.
