Rosepine LA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Rosepine LA. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many points to examine. For example, many students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the only factors that need to be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final judgment when picking an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Rosepine LA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Rosepine LA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Louisiana technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Louisiana junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Louisiana colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Rosepine LA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rosepine LA can perform a multitude of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Rosepine LA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Rosepine LA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Rosepine LA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Rosepine LA students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Rosepine LA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Rosepine LA electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Rosepine residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Rosepine LA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
