East Leroy MI electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near East Leroy MI. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are a number of factors to evaluate. For example, some students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole things that need to be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

East Leroy MI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near East Leroy MI. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Michigan trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Michigan junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Michigan colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

East Leroy MI electrician wiring boxElectricians in East Leroy MI can perform a multitude of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

East Leroy MI student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from East Leroy MI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask East Leroy MI electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the East Leroy MI area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the East Leroy MI program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help East Leroy MI grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with East Leroy MI area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local East Leroy MI electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your East Leroy residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near East Leroy MI, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Classroom instruction should provide a real-world context, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the type of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Every program offers different options for certification also. Probably the best approach to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and faculty.
