Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Vardaman MS electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Vardaman MS. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Mississippi vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Mississippi community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Mississippi colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.
