Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Avon MT electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Avon MT. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Montana technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Montana community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Montana institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam
