Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Winifred MT electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Winifred MT. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Montana trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Montana junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Montana colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

If not, ask a local Winifred MT electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Winifred home. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.
