Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Minden NV electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Minden NV. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Nevada technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Nevada community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Nevada colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Minden NV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Minden NV can undertake a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Minden NV student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling costs from Minden NV are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Minden NV electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Minden NV area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Minden NV school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Minden NV grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Minden NV area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Minden NV electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Minden home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Minden NV, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Schooling For Electricians and wanting more information on the topic Electrician Training Programs. But as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to evaluate and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a must that any electrical training program that you are assessing includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world perspective, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Each program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you decide on is the right one for you. It is the county seat of Douglas County[2] and is adjacent to the town of Gardnerville. It was founded in 1906 by Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg Jr., who named it after the town of Minden, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was near his father's birthplace.[3] A large share of the first settlers were Germans.[4] Minden was founded on company land of the Dangberg Home Ranch and Dangberg commissioned most of the town's early buildings.[5] Minden has had a post office since 1906.[6]
