Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Mine Hill NJ electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Mine Hill NJ. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by New Jersey community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New Jersey institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Mine Hill NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mine Hill NJ can carry out a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Mine Hill NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling costs from Mine Hill NJ are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Mine Hill NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Mine Hill NJ area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Mine Hill NJ school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Mine Hill NJ graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Mine Hill NJ area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Mine Hill NJ electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Mine Hill home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mine Hill NJ, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
