Moravia NY electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Moravia NY. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are a number of points to examine. For instance, some potential students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have identified some that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that need to be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Moravia NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Moravia NY. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by New York technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by New York community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Moravia NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Moravia NY can undertake a wide range of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Moravia NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more practical alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Moravia NY are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Moravia NY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Moravia NY area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Moravia NY school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Moravia NY grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Moravia NY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Moravia NY electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Moravia home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Moravia NY, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Become Electrician and wanting more information on the topic Electrician Certification Training. But as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a necessity that any electrical training that you are reviewing includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program provides different possibilities for certification as well. Probably the best approach to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the training program you decide on is the right one for you. With the right training, effort and commitment, the final result will be a new occupation as a professional electrician in Moravia NY.
