Round Lake NY electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Round Lake NY. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of factors to consider. For instance, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have located several that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Round Lake NY electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Round Lake NY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New York trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by New York junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Round Lake NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Round Lake NY can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Round Lake NY student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more practical choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving expenses from Round Lake NY are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Round Lake NY electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Round Lake NY area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Round Lake NY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Round Lake NY students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Round Lake NY area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Round Lake NY electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Round Lake residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Round Lake NY, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Round Lake (village), New York

Round Lake is a village in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 604 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from a circular lake adjacent to the village. In 1975, the Round Lake Historic District, which encompasses the village, was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The village began in 1867 as a summer camp meeting locale for groups of Methodists. At first, visitors lived in tents, while visiting ministers could rent space in the second story of the meeting's passenger station. By 1868 more permanent structures including cottages, a two-story trustees office and bookstore, and a market appeared. The village was owned and governed by the Round Lake Association. By 1881 lectures patterned after Chautauqua Institution were being conducted.[3]:p.44 In 1887 George West constructed the George West Museum of Art and Archaeology to enhance the cultural offerings.[3]:p.64

The 1980-pipe Ferris Tracker organ, originally built in 1847 for Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City, was moved to the Round Lake Auditorium in 1888 and is considered to be the oldest and largest three-manual organ in existence.[4] The organ is still used for musical programs today.
